DES634

A studio taught by Jean Brennan at Pratt Institute.

Historically, design has provided solutions that increase efficiency and performance of objects, services and systems, while creating value, health, communication, wonder and knowledge. Unfortunately, the profession has also promoted egregious artifacts and processes that harm people and contribute to environmental degradation. Packaging, in particular, has created significant waste and consumer debris. This course creates a conversation on how we, as designers, proactively take responsibility to reverse such patterns.

Sustainable design is a set of principles that uses materials research, more-than human centered design, and systems thinking to generate best practices in the field. Sustainability encompasses not only environmental issues, but also social, ethical and financial ones.
